The Dream of Aladdin
Date: February- March 1991
Role: Ahmed
Theater: Laguna Playhouse Youth Theatre, Moulton Theatre, Laguna Beach, CA
Director: Joe Lauderdale
Plot: Written by Brian Kral, The Dream of Aladdin reimagines the classic tale as a blend of myth, comedy, and surreal fantasy. The story follows a dreamlike version of Aladdin’s world, where shifting perspectives and unexpected twists leave the audience questioning what is real and what exists only in Aladdin’s imagination. Instead of relying on spectacle, the script focuses on character-driven storytelling, humor, and a more introspective approach to the familiar Middle Eastern legend.
Production notes: Pedro(credited as Peter Balmaceda) played Ahmed in this Laguna Playhouse Youth Theatre production. Director Joe Lauderdale staged the play with handmade set pieces, snake-like genie effects, and a stylized desert environment. The production featured a cast of 13 performers, from teens to adults, each playing multiple roles. The staging emphasized physical storytelling, ensemble work, and imaginative visual choices over traditional spectacle.
A Los Angeles Times feature described Kral’s script as “one of the best” versions of the Aladdin story, noting its humor, surreal elements, and modern tone. The article highlighted Lauderdale’s decision to avoid a large, traditional genie in favor of “a very small genie with a lot of power,” as well as the production’s blend of Egyptian-inspired costume pieces and handcrafted props.
